Surnames mentioned: NEL - JANSE VAN RENSBURG - RIPHAGEN - RUDMAN
Hannes Nel, the contritutor and current owner of this Bible, writes:
This Bible belonged to my Great Grandmother, Barendina Daniela Nel nee Janse van Rensburg. In our family I'm the genealogy researcher, so the bible was given to me by my cousin Gedeon Naude who received it from his mother Thea Naude nee Nel, grand-daughter of the above mentioned Barendina Daniela Nel. Thea's father was Daniel (Danie) Theodorus Nel listed in the Bible. Her mother was Maria Louisa (Marietjie) Nel nee Theron.
This is my own assumption about the origin of the Bible: One of my great grandmother's sons (Danie) was married to a lady missionary (Marietjie) at Madzimoyo in Fort Jamison Northern Rhodesia. Danie passed away when Thea was 3 months old. "Suster" (meaning Nurse) Riphagen (Tantu)(not sure what the native meaning is) was a Nurse at Madzimoyo. Marietjie stayed as a missionary at Madzimoyo (also a nurse) but later returned to South Africa. The Bible could possbily have been a good gesture gift for the loss of a son and a daughter and grand child returning to SA.What is unclear is that Nurse Riphagen passed away in 1939 and the Bible entry is 1940.
